How to Install Chrome Parental Control Extension

📦 Installation Methods:

You can install the extension in two ways:

Method 1: Install from Chrome Web Store (Recommended)

1 Find the Extension

  1. Open Chrome browser on your child's Chromebook
  2. Go to: Chrome Web Store
  3. Search for "Chrome Parental Control"
  4. Click "Add to Chrome"
Note: If the extension is not yet published, use Method 2 (Developer Mode) below.

2 Set Up Admin Password

  1. After installation, click the extension icon in Chrome toolbar
  2. You'll be prompted to set an admin password
  3. Enter a strong password (you'll need this to access settings)
  4. Save the password

3 Configure Settings

  1. Open the extension admin panel (click extension icon → "Open Admin Panel")
  2. Add websites to block in the "Blocked Sites" section
  3. Set daily time limits if desired
  4. Configure schedule restrictions (optional)
  5. Click "Save Settings"

4 Upgrade to Premium (Optional)

To unlock all features:

  1. Visit: Purchase Premium License
  2. Complete payment (£20 one-time)
  3. Receive license key via email
  4. Activate license in the extension admin panel
Premium Features: Unlimited site blocking, per-site time limits, schedule controls, mobile admin access, and more!

Method 2: Install via Developer Mode

⚠️ Note: This method is for advanced users or when the extension is not yet in Chrome Web Store. The extension must be reloaded after each Chrome restart in developer mode.

1 Get the Extension Files

Option A: Download from GitHub

  1. Go to: GitHub Repository
  2. Click "Code" → "Download ZIP"
  3. Extract the ZIP file on your computer

Option B: Use Local Files

If you have the files locally, copy the entire extension folder to the Chromebook.

2 Enable Developer Mode

  1. Open Chrome on the Chromebook
  2. Go to: chrome://extensions/
  3. Toggle "Developer mode" ON (top right corner)

3 Load the Extension

  1. Click "Load unpacked" button
  2. Navigate to the extension folder
  3. Select the folder containing manifest.json
  4. Click "Select Folder"
✅ Extension is now installed! You should see it in your extensions list.

4 Set Up Admin Password

  1. Click the extension icon in Chrome toolbar
  2. Set an admin password when prompted
  3. Remember this password - you'll need it to access settings

Initial Configuration

Blocked Websites

The extension comes pre-configured with a list of "dangerous sites" including:

  • Adult content sites
  • Gambling websites
  • Violence/gore sites
  • Anonymous chat services
  • File sharing sites (potential malware)

You can add or remove sites in the admin panel.

Time Limits

Set daily time limits:

  1. Open admin panel
  2. Set "Daily Time Limit" (in minutes)
  3. When time is up, all internet access is blocked

Premium Feature: Set per-site time limits (e.g., YouTube: 30 minutes per day)

Schedule Restrictions

Control when internet access is allowed:

  1. Enable "Schedule Restrictions" in admin panel
  2. Set allowed hours (e.g., 3 PM - 8 PM)
  3. Outside these hours, all sites are blocked
Important: When schedule is enabled, ONLY sites in the "Allowed Sites" list are accessible during allowed hours. All other sites are blocked, even if not in the blocked list.

Mobile Admin Access

📱 Control from Your Phone:

You can manage the extension from your mobile device:

  1. Open the extension on the Chromebook
  2. Go to "Mobile Admin" section
  3. Set up mobile access with a password
  4. Access the mobile admin URL from your phone
  5. Block sites, adjust settings, view activity - all from your phone!

Premium Feature: Full mobile admin access is included with Premium license.

Troubleshooting

Extension Not Blocking Sites

  1. Check that extension is enabled (chrome://extensions/)
  2. Verify sites are in the blocked list
  3. Check if schedule restrictions are blocking everything
  4. Reload the extension (click reload icon in chrome://extensions/)
  5. Restart Chrome

Can't Access Admin Panel

  1. Make sure you're using the correct password
  2. Try resetting the password via mobile-setup.html
  3. Check that the extension is enabled

Extension Disappears After Restart

If installed via Developer Mode, you need to reload it after each Chrome restart:

  1. Go to chrome://extensions/
  2. Click the reload icon on the extension

Solution: Install from Chrome Web Store (when available) - it will persist after restarts.
